Anyone out there?

It’s been ten months since I last posted.

This happened

1st day

And this happened…..lastday

A whole school year has passed! We’ve celebrated many holidays, went to Disney, had lots of adventures, made it through another Wisconsin winter, and I really hope to get back into blogging because I miss recording our lives in this manner and interacting with all of you!

Is anyone still out there??

Ultimate Blog Party 2014

Welcome friends new and old and thanks for stopping by today!!

My name is Wendy and this is my fourth year participating in the Ultimate Blog Party! I’m a full-time working mom located in “Middle of Nowhere,” Wisconsin and am in the process of re-vamping my blog – after four years of being focused mostly on my son, Mason, it’s time for a change and in the next few weeks, I’ll be rolling out “” which I’m pretty excited about 🙂

Mason just turned four last month and being his mom is the most challenging and rewarding thing I’ve ever done. He’s into monster trucks, puppies, tractors, construction equipment, penguins, riding his bike, golf, and just recently learned the phrases “You hurt my feeeeelings!” (usually followed by “because you didn’t let me do xyz”) and “No, five more minutes!” which are both about as fun as they sound.

I’ve wanted to work with animals since I was a little kid and even though my junior high math teacher laughed at me and said that all girls go through an “I want to be a veterinarian” phase, that’s one thing that’s remained a constant in my life. Nearly 20 years after his naysaying, I’m happy to say that I love my job as a veterinary assistant, so so much for “phases” huh? I’m passionate about animals and we share our home with two retired racing greyhounds and a geriatric cat. I’m a “crazy dog person” and my beloved dog, Joe, basically holds “first born child” status in my eyes.

In my (basically non-existent) spare time, I like to read (check me out on GoodReads), geocache, research frugal living, walk 5ks (especially Color Run ones!) and pretend that I’m going to soon get in better shape, learn to cook, start clipping and actually remembering to USE coupons, and be a better housekeeper. This year, I’m trying to better my life through checking in through Weekly Wishes, grow my relationship with God, focus on a few goals for the year as well as take lots of pictures, and be a better Mom, Wife, Friend, and Blogger. Oh, and I want to survive sending my son off to 4 year old Kindergarten in the fall too! In other words, I like to have a lot of stuff on my plate!

How about you, is your plate full? Are you enjoying the party? Here, come get another piece of cake! Be sure to say hi and introduce yourself so I can stop by your site too! Or, let’s catch up on Twitter or Instagram. Social media is our friend! Have a great day and happy Blog Partying!

Weekly Wishes #5

Well, I had basically three weeks to work on “last week’s” wishes and here’s how I did….

1) Get my house picked up. The best part of having company over is the results of the manic cleaning that happens right before they come. It’s been a week since Mason’s party at the house and our house is still looking good. Yay.

2) Not spend any more more (unplanned) money on Mason’s birthday party. Accomplished.

3) In bed by 10:30 every weeknight. Ummm, not so much. But better than before….

4) Get back into the swing of reading all four of my Bible reading plans every day. Accomplished,

5) Scale back – my endless to do list is starting to drag me down. Commit to stop over-committing. Um, did you notice I didn’t blog for two weeks? Well, that was the only thing I let go by the wayside. Oops.

My goal for April – Set my budget and stick to it. I made a budget for March and totally ignored it and overspent in every area. April is the month that I get back on track!

And my weekly goals

1) Finish picking up my computer desk. I posted a picture on Instagram and the 40 Bags Facebook group this morning to shame myself into finishing it and I only got about halfway done today. I WILL finish it.

2) Wean Mason from Wii Sports. This kid is ridiculously addicted to playing tennis, golf, and baseball on the Wii. It’s fantastic exercise (seriously, this kid jumps and dances around until he’s soaked with sweat) but it’s become the root of all tantrums, every conversation, and way too much begging around here so something has to give.

3) Buy my niece her birthday presents. Any suggestions for a girl turning five? I don’t see them very often, so I don’t know what she’s “in to” which makes it harder.

4) List items for sale on Facebook Buying/Selling Pages and get at least half of my consignment sale prep done. The consignment sale starts the 10th and I just got my totes out yesterday. I want to try to sell some stuff for 100% profit on Facebook before it goes to the consignment sale and they take their 30% cut.

5) Be a better friend. I’ve been finding lately that up to a week goes by before I talk to friends that I use to talk to daily. I need to reach out more and make sure that stops happening.

Just a Tease

Hi Internet!

I’m still alive!! It’s been a CRAZY last two weeks with Mason’s birthday, two birthday parties, FPU, karate classes, stomach issues, basement leaking problems, a good friend giving birth, an absolutely INSANE two weeks at work, the whole shebang! This week promises to be a bit calmer (hopefully not famous last words) and I have SO much fun stuff coming up on the blog

  • More vacation posts
  • Mason’s birthday post
  • Mason’s 4 year old survey
  • Why my then three year old is WAY braver than his parents
  • Mason’s Jake and the Neverland Pirate’s birthday party
  • An awesome giveaway
  • A Financial Peace University Update
  • My updated wishes
  • Three weeks worth of Project 365 (with a few missing days *sigh*
  • and so much more!

So, check back later this week for lots of updates and sorry about the radio silence! Has anyone invented an way to add an additional five hours into the day yet?!

My Favorite (Android) Phone Apps

If you’re anything like me, you use your smartphone a lot. Maybe you check Facebook and hang out on Instagram, maybe you make some phone calls here and there, maybe you text like crazy, or maybe that little handheld device runs your whole life – I think the latter is how it is for me!

It seems like everyone is aware of the big name apps like Facebook, Instagram, Vine, Candy Crush Saga, Google Maps,  Pinterest,  Angry Birds, Gmail, etc but what about those other apps that you use a lot that aren’t necessarily the same apps everyone and their grandma is using? I know I have have several apps that I find incredibly useful that no one else seems to have heard of and I’m sure you do too!

So let’s all geek out and help one another be more productive (or maybe less productive in some cases LOL) and share your favorite non-mainstream phone apps via the linky or in the comments.

Link Up Next Week

I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S4 and some of my favorite apps are as follows:

TinyCam Monitor (link)- This app, combined with several wireless cameras in my house lets me see what’s going on in my house at any moment, night and day. Waaay cheaper than the $250 baby monitor systems, I can watch Mason, my dogs, or my garage with the click of a button, pan and zoom around the room, hear what’s going on, and even speak through my phone and out the camera. Super cool and very useful. I’ll never let a friend buy an expensive baby monitor again.

Fuel Log  (link)- I use this to track my gas mileage and trip expenses. I log my odometer reading and gas purchases with every fill up and it calculates my miles per gallon, average cost per day of driving my car, average fuel consumption, basically everything I’d want to know and compares it to previous data. I could also log oil changes etc if I really wanted to.

MediSafe (link)- I am totally mis-using this app but that’s okay. It’s made for reminding you to take your medication but I use it as a reminder program for my entire life! A pop up reminder reminds me to water my plants twice a week, give my cat his meds, do chores around the house on a weekly or every other week basis, scoop the cat box every other day, all sorts of little things that I was constantly forgetting. I can snooze the reminder if I’m in the middle of doing something else and that works way better than something other apps where I’d click close and forget all about it.

Feedly (link)- probably not obscure, but this is how I read blogs. I have it on my computer, my Kindle, and on my phone and thus, no matter where I’m reading from, it knows which posts I have and haven’t read. I’ve also got them sorted by blogs I gotta read every single day vs everything else. Love Feedly!

Amazon Cloud Drive (link)- After having my phone go missing on several occasions, as well as drowning in the rain once, I know the heartbreak losing hundreds of irreplaceable photos and videos. It’s an awful feeling. Now, thanks to Amazon Cloud, as soon as I’m anywhere near wi-fi, all of my pictures and videos are automatically backed up onto the cloud, which I can then access from anywhere I have internet access. I can also transfer them to another phone if need be. The peace of mind is awesome.

So, there you have it! What are your favorite apps these days? They don’t have to be  overly useful or time saving like mine, they can be the newest game you’re addicted to or the way you follow your favorite actors – if you find an app worthwhile, please share!

Disclaimer: I was not compensated in any way for anything said in this post – none of these companies/apps even know I exist. I just find them useful and think you might too!

Share Your Favorite Apps – Linky Next Week

The other day, I was thinking about doing a post about all of my favorite “non-traditional” aps. You know, everyone is using Facebook and Instagram, but I wanted to talk about what are the NOT so common apps that I use every day!

Then, just like she was reading my mind, Christa posted a question on Twitter asking what everyone’s favorite non-traditional apps are. Much to my surprise, she had never heard of any of the ones that I found so useful and an idea was born!

Link Up Next Week

Please join me next week, on Wednesday, February 26th and write a post about your favorite “non-traditional” phone aps. So no Facebook, Foursquare, Instagram, Angry Birds, Skype, Pandora, SnapChat, Google Maps, FlappyBird, Vine, YouTube, and any other app that is on everyone on Earth’s smartphone, but anything else goes!

Being the geek I am, I look forward to sharing my favorite apps with you and also learning about a whole bunch of cool apps that I’m not currently using but should be! See you next Wednesday

Weekly Wishes #1

A few weeks ago, I came up with a fairly lofty list of goals for 2014. I figured the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time, so coming up with some smaller weekly goals should really help me achieve my bigger goals for the year, right?

And, it just so happens that there is an awesome link-up called “Weekly Wishes” hosted by The Nectar Collective for people to talk about what they want to accomplish each week. Lots of great blogs with great weekly goals – you should check it out!

My goals for this week

1) Drink at least twice as much water as pop each day. That means if I’m drink 20 oz of pop throughout the day, I need to also drink 40 oz of water as well. I want to cut down on my pop consumption, but I know going cold turkey doesn’t work for me, so hopefully this will help.

2) Pick back up my 365 Days of Greyhounds photo project. I fell off the bandwagon and am
kicking myself.

3) Comment on an average of at least five blogs a day.

4) Spend quality time with at least one, if not two friends this week. Reach out to at least one friend daily via text message. (AKA – don’t get so sucked into blogging/trip planning/message boards that you’re ignoring everyone else.)

5) Strive to eat a healthier breakfast every morning (I’m currently eating three granola bars for breakfast. Don’t look at me like that, I KNOW!)

6) Reasonable bedtime this week. I’ve scrambled into bed near midnight way too often lately.

What are your goals for the week?

Catch the Moment Week #1

It’s been fun trying to catch an interesting moment every day this week. These are the moments I caught in the first 9 days of January.

Day 1: Fresh from the tub

Day 2: Today, we put away Christmas. The dogs were super happy to get their regular beds back after 5 weeks without them.

Day 3: Mason is super thrilled about his Doc McStuffin’s pajamas. Me? I’m looking forward to being able to pee in private again some day.

Day 4: We played Chutes and Ladders for the first time. Mason thinks the chutes are slides. He won, but cheated badly.

Day 5: We spent the -12Âş day doing puzzles at the library

Day 6: I tried really hard to get a picture of the fun had during “Tickle Wars” between Mason and Daddy but failed. Missing this moment showed me not relying on soley my camera phone is a must!

Day 7: We broke out the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that Mason got for Christmas. I was Raphael and he usually called me “Hey You!”

Day 8: The past two nights have been tied up by reading this book

Day 9: I love these sweet crooked little toofs

I charged up my Canon 300HS (decent point and shoot) with making my goal for NEXT week being pictures from a real camera, not just my phone.

Follow my pictures through the week on Instagram and if you’re a dog fan, I’m also doing #greyhound365 which involves a picture of my silly sweet greyhounds every day too.

Nurse Loves Farmer

If you do a “Picture a Day” recap post, whether it’s Catch the Moment, Project 365, or something else, please leave a link in the comments – I’d love to take a sneak peek into your week!

Five on Friday 11/1/13

I’m linking up today to share five good things this Friday.

1) Trick or Treating last night was super-duper fun despite the awful rain/mist combo. We unintentionally met up with Mason’s 2nd cousin and spent 3/4 of the night with them, which helped distract Mason from his “aching feet” (He was complaining by the SECOND house, btw) It was fun to see the boys have a blast together talking about “creepers and freakers” (their play on the Grim Reeper LOL) and Mason got us lots and lots of candy.

2) I got an awesome haircut on Wednesday. Totally love it and also like the dye job that went with it. I also survived my second eyebrow waxing as well and am pretty sure I discovered my new official salon. Totally loved the easy going chatter between all the hairdressers and clients and the girl who cut my hair and I had so much in common. Will definitely be going back!

3) I received notice that my “Backer” package had shipped for the Veronica Mars Kickstarter project. Veronica Mars is my FAVORITE show of all time and I was more than happy to kick in a few bucks to help fund a movie and get some swag in return. A Veronica Mars t-shirt and first dibs on seeing the actual movie? Yes, please!

4) Last Saturday, my bff and I had the ultimate girls night. We went and got “spa manicures” (and had the most hysterically bad customer service), went out for dinner and drinks, and then went to a haunted house/haunted trail. The haunted trail was pretty awesome, unfortunately the haunted house was a 2+ hour wait in line in 40 degree temps, but hey, I had great company!

5) Mason got invited to his first non-relative birthday party this weekend. Birthday parties for little kids (ages 1-4) in this area are pretty much usually family and friends of the family, so this will be his first opportunity at a party with a lot of other little kids that he isn’t related to. I’m probably just as excited about the party as he is (nah, I doubt it) because it just seems like such a fun milestone. For those of you who’s kids have been going to “friend” parties since your kids were babies, ya’ll probably think I’m nuts but oh well!

All in all, this was a wonderful week with more fun yet to come. Hope your week was just as great and your weekend is even better! Thanks for stopping by today!
