Christmas Day Part 2

Mason ready to go traveling in my new suitcase!

Giving his new Brobee friend a kiss

Totally excited about his Chuck Ramps

Then we went to Grandma’s house for lunch, Mason took a nap while the adults opened presents, and then Mason came and just wanted to watch.

Grandpa quickly figured out that if he started opening one of Mason’s presents and looked like he was having a great time, Mason would want in on the action. Score!

Reading a new book with Grandpa

Playing with his new laptop from Uncle Greg (fingers on home row already, that’s my boy!)

Playing with his new tractor, surrounded by yet more new toys

While Christmas part two was not void of tears and tantrums either, it went quite a bit smoother than at home and we enjoyed a great afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa B. We then headed home and Mason played non-stop with his new toys while we tried to find our living room floor. He actually still has several presents at home left to open, so good thing we’re in no hurry to take down the Christmas tree.

Christmas Eve

Any time a person ventures off on their own, they soon realize it’s all up to them what holiday traditions they embrace from their childhood and which ones they discard. Other than driving around looking at Christmas lights, my family didn’t do much of anything for Christmas, so it’s been extra special trying to figure out what special things we want Mason to experience every holiday season. The plan this year was dinner at Grandma B’s, one present, and bed. It didn’t quite work out that way though….

Around lunch time, Mason’s Uncle Russ and Aunt Jen stopped to visit, which was a great treat because we only usually see them every fall, so to see them twice in just a few months was super nice! Mason was way less shy this time, although it was also in the middle of his normal nap time, so he was wound up beyond all belief. And, total fail, we didn’t take any pictures.

After they left, it was nap time and then we were going to Grandma B’s house for a giant lasagna dinner and to open our Christmas Eve gift – a pair of new pajamas to wear the next morning! Unfortunately at about 3:00, Grandma B called to cancel our plans because she wasn’t feeling well. We were able to rush to the store before they closed and hamburger to make dinner with (tator tot hotdish) so it all worked out okay despite being a fairly lazy evening at home. We watched A Charlie Brown Christmas to make up for it.

Right before Mason went to bed, I got a text from Auntie Sarah asking if he could open one of his presents from her that night still.  We decided one extra present wouldn’t kill him and let him have at it.

In case you can’t tell, it’s one of those “Read a Story” books so now he can hear Auntie Sarah read him Frosty the Snowman any time he wants. How cool is that?!? He totally loved it and wanted to play it again and again.

Next, he opened his pajamas next and he hugged them and said “Blaaaanky” and then said “Ni ni?” so we knew it was time for bed!

First Christmas Even with Toddler Mason? Totally a success!

Five Fingers of Thanks Thursday

This week, I’m so thankful for this wonderful weather we’re having. Two weeks ago, it was in the 30s and 40s and I was expecting us to skip fall and go straight into winter much like we seemed to drag out winter and go straight into summer. Instead, it’s been in the high 70s all week and should continue through the weekend. This makes going to the park in the evening SO much nicer!

2) I’m thankful for the fun family time we’ve been able to have lately. The trip to Duluth, a trip to the pumpkin patch, and some relaxing nights at home. Love love love my little family.

3) I’m thankful that the critters are all doing okay. Buzz kitty has been sick since May and Joe the Greyhound sprained his toe before Labor Day, so while we’re not 100% yet, I’m very happy that we haven’t lost any more of our beloved animal friends. And that the cats are done with their 10+ medications a day they were on back in June. Yikes.

4) I’m especially thankful for any time spent with friends and family. Recently some people around me have experienced huge, horrible, unexpected losses that have reminded me that any day could be the last time you see someone, despite how much time it may seem you have with them. Cherish every moment while you’re in it and let the people you love know it!

5) I’m thankful that despite his ups and downs, an obsession with turning off the tv and stealing electronics items, tantrums, random food refusals, and the etc etc etc that make a toddler a toddler, Mason is such an easy going little guy. 2 hour car ride? Why not!? Dinner out when he is normally in bed? Okay! New teacher in the daycare room this week? Why not! While I definitely don’t qualify as  a “new mom” anymore, I’m definitely a new TODDLER mom, so him being fairly easy going is a blessing I don’t take for granted!

What are you guys thankful for this week?

The Birthday Trifecta

Today is a very happy day in history!

13 years ago, our beloved Katze was born! Katze came to us from my dad’s best friend when he found his foster kid trying to drown 7 week old Katze in their fish pond. The irony of the sitation was that my dad hated cats and is allergic to them, so our house was the last place he should have brought him. I spent those first few months of Katze’s life being sure that he would be evicted at any momement, but 13 years, 1 cat, 2 dogs, another house, and a baby later, he’s still here.

26 years ago, Mason’s Auntie Molly (of Infertile Nanny fame) was born! Mason loves his Auntie and wishes her a very happy birthday!! Go swing over to her blog and wish her a happy birthday!

30 years ago, Mason’s Uncle Greg was born! We unfortunately didn’t get to see him at the family picnic on Saturday, so some bloggy birthday wishes will have to do. Happy Birthday, Uncle Greg!

Happy Birthday you guys!!

First Parade of the Year!

I love going to parades and when I was growing up, it was a family affair. Then, after everyone “grew up,”  I found msyelf going to parades alone. Which is kind of sad, if you think about it! Well not anymore! Last year, I took Mason to three local parades and this year, I’m hoping to get to all four!

For reference, here was Mason at this same parade last year

Look how tiny and wee he was!!! (2.5 months old)

This year, not only was Mason much bigger and much more active, the weather was MUCH better. Instead of low 60s with the threat of rain, it was in the low 80s. And guys? I totally managed to get sunscreen in Mason’s EYES #mommyfail I coated his legs, arms, and face in sunscreen, loaded him in the car, and off we went. Got to the parade site, loaded him in his stroller, and found a spot in the semi-shade. I looked at him a minute later and saw a tear running down his face and couldn’t figure out why. Until I realized his eyes were all red, swelled half shut, and he was rubbing them trying to stop the burning. I felt AWFUL.

Luckily, this parade was taking place in our hometown, so I was able to call on SUPER Grandma to come save the day with a wet washrag to try to clean out his eyes a bit. I still feel bad!

Mason was much more interested in watching all the older kids run and get candy than he was in watching the parade. That was, until a local motel’s float went by….

What was Mason so excited about?

A giant St. Bernard!! LOL This kid is definitely mine!

So, lesson learned – not QUITE so much sunsreen on the face, especially near the eyes and a diaper bag with wipes can be very handy even if you’re just two miles from home for a half an hour parade.

Next year, I totally think Mason will be standing there at the curb scoring candy for Mom & Dad!!

Tell Us Something Good: Grandparents

I’m linking up again today with The Life of Rylie… and Bryce Too and Angelica’s Awesome Adventures to share some good things in life!

We’re very lucky that both sets of parents live within a few miles of us and are more than happy to help us out with Mason and the dogs any time we need them. In fact, if we don’t call them to come over basically every weekend, they’re calling us and asking “When can I see Mason??”

As you all probably know, this past weekend, I skipped out of town. My parents drove me to the airport so I wouldn’t have to pay to leave my car. My mom spent the night at the house with Mason & the dogs so SuperDad wouldn’t have to take off from work just to sit home alone  (he works nights). Saturday afternoon, Mason spent the day with SuperDad’s parents so SuperDad could have a cookout and bonfire with his friends. Then on Sunday, my dad stayed at the house for a few hours while Mason slept so SuperDad could pick me up at the airport.

My mom is the type who calls every time she goes to Wal-mart or Sam’s Club to ask if we need anything. SuperDad’s parents are the type that don’t blink when we say “Can Mason stay at your house for a week while we go to Canada?”

We’re so lucky to have such supportive parents in our lives that live so close and Mason is so lucky to have such doting Grandparents. Having never had a good relationship with my parents growing up, I’m so glad that we’re all able to come together over this handsome little dude.

So my good thing for this week? Fun weekends away made longer and less expensive by supportive and wonderful (grand)parents.

Happy 2nd Birthday, Chloe

On Saturday, my only niece turned two and Mason and I went to her Hello Kitty birthday party!

Chloe loved the Toy Story coloring book that Mason got her!

She did think her new picnic table made a good jungle gym

A Visit With Cousins

On Sunday, we went to an open house to meet Mason’s new cousin Emilee, who was born on March 9th.

Mason definitely approved of their house, as they already have a 3 year old boy and a 10 year old boy and TOYS galore!

Playing with his cousin Nick.

Exploring the toy selection

Cooking us lunch.

In hindsight, I wish I would have brought my real camera, but at least I had a crappy camera phone to save the day! Now that Mason is more interactive with other people and toys, I need to remember to bring it with everywhere we go!

I grew up with no cousins near my age that all lived far away who I only saw twice a year, so I’m glad that Mason has many (2nd) cousins within 2 years of him that live within a short distance of us! I’m sure they’ll have even more fun together in the years to come!
