Curently… 8/16/12

Mason is currently…

Happy About – getting to leave school early today. We pulled him out to take him to Wilderness Walk and he was THRILLED to be awoken from his nap to see us there!

Searching for – his missing train DVD. We have turned the house upsidedown several times over these last few months for his “Real Trains for Kids” DVD (his favorite trains EVER) and cannot seem to find it. He’ll carry around the case and say “My trains missing. Find them?” in the most pitiful voice ever. I’m getting really close to buying another copy (and guaranteeing that I find the first one as soon as I cut the shrink wrap)

Making – food out of tinfoil. The other night he made me eggs, a taco, and a banana. Out of the same piece of tinfoil, all oddly the same shape.

Feeling – kind of sick. He’s come down with a really wet sounding cough and has been running a slight fever. Poor guy. Heading to the doctor today on Friday in hopes we can nip it in the bud before the weekend.

Going – to see a whole lot of semis at a semi truck show. Last year we went to meet the dude from Ice Road Truckers (one of SuperDad’s favorite shows) and we realized that Mason would get a kick out of it. So we’re going back again, this time to watch Mason lose his mind over a huge parking lot FULL of semis.

Happy About – being on vacation. I was suppose to be visiting my favorite Michigan friends this weekend (BOOO) but that fell through due to plane tickets jumping $200 in a 4 hour span. I kept the time off so I’m off until Tuesday. Woot woot.

Searching for – easy answers to all the things I need to research and haven’t had time. Mainly, where to move my 401k from my previously employer, where to start Mason’s 529, what should I do for my new blog theme, how can I get blueberry stains out of the carpet, etc etc etc.

Making – umm, soon I will be making dozens and dozens of sale tags for the consignment sale that is exactly one month away. Does that count?

Feeling – overwhelmed by the vast amount of stuff I want to do in the next four days since I want to accomplish IT ALL plus do a lot of relaxing.

Going – to the dentist tomorrow. Yee haw.

How about you? What are you CURRENTLY up to?

Happy Gotcha Day, Joe!

8 years ago today, after spending the night in the Twin Cities, we came home with the “young, goofy, and good with cats” male greyhound we had been waiting for for for 4 months.

Joe 2004

Since then, Joe has gained a greyhound friend, went a little white in the face, gained a human brother and then last year lost his greyhound friend and a kitty friend, but through it all, he’s been MY best friend.

Happy 8 years with us, my bestest boy!!

Mason is currently…

Looking forward to –  Spending lots of time with the Grandmas. He’ll be with Grandma J at our house Thursday and Friday night and then spend Saturday and Sunday with Grandma B and Papa. Grandma J offers lots of singing, playing cars, and tickling and Grandma B has his beloved “traaaac-tor” and more Thomas and cooking paraphernalia than an entire store. No wonder he’s excited

Making – block towers and then knocking them down. That’s been a favorite this week

Working on – potty training. He peed in the potty twice in one day this week. WAHOO!!!

Reading – “Goodnight Wonder Pets” and “Llama Llama Nighty Night” every night before bed. He takes another Wonder Pets book to bed with him, that I refuse to try to read him because it has waaay too many words for Mr. “Turn the Page, I’m Impatient”

Listening to – everyone and everything. The things that are coming out of his mouth these days amuse me to no end and I know he’s just picking up language from listening to everyone around him. The other day I told him we didn’t have a second ice pack and he responded “Mason need two ice. Daddy go to work and make two ice!” Really kid?!

Mason’s Mom is currently…

Looking forward to: RockFest! Today kicks off four days of fun in the sun with my honey while we listen to awesome bands such as Shinedown, Poison, Hollywood Undead, and Papa Roach. Going to see outdoor concerts is kind of our summer “thing” and we’ve been looking forward to this for quite a while. Yay music and a few days off from work!

Making – zero progress on any To Do list. If I liked actually getting mundane stuff accomplished as much as I liked making lists about it, my house would be a lot cleaner!

Working on – Couch to 5k! I’ve always hated running but am continually drawn to this program because they make it seem like ANYONE can do it. I’m super out of shape and wanted to do something that didn’t require videos and weights and two hours a day or something, so I’m trying this. Today I’ll be doing Day One of Week Two, which means it’s the 4th “workout” and officially the longest I’ve ever stuck with any sort of fitness thing. Yay me!

Reading – Just finished Jodi Picoult (and daughter’s) “Between the Lines” and was reminded that I really don’t like fairy tales or anything remotely fantasy. Just started “Some Assembly Required” by Anne Lamott and am 8 books behind on my goal to read 104 books this year.

Listening to: In a few hours, lots of rock music. See above.

So what are you up to? Come link up!

Currently…. 7/5/12

Another busy week around these parts. Swimming on Sunday, parade on Wednesday, and lots and lots of 93º+  days in between. Here’s what we’re CURRENTLY up to, inspired by the ever great Randalin and Wendy

Mason is currently…

Inspired by – his books. We went to the swimming pool on Sunday and he made me play an elaborate game where I was a tractor that he was riding (while he made tractor noises) and then I would get stuck in the mud and he would have to help me get out. About a month ago, we’d frequently read a book about a tractor that got stuck in the mud. It apparently stuck with him!

Devouring – blueberries. Lots and lots of blueberries. He can’t get enough. He would have a pint basket of them at every meal if we let him.

Thankful for – Many many hours of playing outside. Daycare has been big on running through the sprinklers and doing water activies outside lately and he LOVES it.

Watching – I introduced him to Garfield this week. He liked it. So now that’s four TV shows he’s willing to watch – Yo Gabba Gabba, Wonder Pets, Alf, and Garfield. LOL I so looooooooooooooove having Amazon Prime on our TV! He also loves watching tractor videos on You Tube.

WeeMason’s Mom is currently…

Inspired by – posts related to “How to Miss a Childhood” about how easy it is to be so sucked into what’s going on on Twitter and Instagram that you’re missing the story unfolding right in your living room.

Devouring – root beer floats, watermelon and food from the grill. Yum!!!

Thankful for – having great relationships with my parents and being able to tell them both “Thank You” and that I appreciate them on a regular basis. Had you asked me five years ago if I would ever imagine a time where I would look foward to my mother coming over on a weekly basis (instead of talking to her on the phone once or twice a month) I would have thought you were nuts. It’s amazing how, while never a magic fix, kids can bring families together.

Watching – Teen Mom. This show is one of my guilty pleasures. I know it’s huge and popular and I shouldn’t be ashamed, but it’s a show on MTV and I’m nearly 30 years old, so it just feels wrong. But I love it anyway. LOL

Starting – to realize that I need to stop researching and thinking about things and actually doing them. Too often I pour a bunch of time into THINKING about things like exercising more, or living simpler, or changing up my investments, but I never move forward with any of the things I research. I should really START to do that, huh?

Baby Keegan

A lot of you in the “baby blogging” world may have heard of Baby Keegan, an adorable little boy who has been battling brain cancer most of his 2 years on this earth.

Very sadly, he passed away this morning. Please, if you make one blog comment today, make it be the one that lets his parents know that you’re thinking of them in this horrible time. As for me, I’ll be hugging Mason that much closer tonight, and ya’ll should do the same. Tantrums, teething, and potty training no longer seem like such a big deal right now, huh?

Ryan and Beth, you are in our thoughts. I’m so sorry for your devastating loss. :o(

About Me

I just realized I still don’t have an About Me page! After blogging here for nearly 2 years, it’s probably about time, huh?

So here we go!

I’m a 29 year old first time mom in Northern Wisconsin. Mason was born on March 16, 2010. If you would have asked me three years ago if I would ever have a kid, I would have laughed and told you “No way!” I never even liked to baby-sit when I was a kid, so life with Mason has definitely been a learning experience and an adventure! Before Mason came along, I had never so much as changed a diaper!

(We really need to take a more current picture, huh?)

I’m wife to my wonderful husband and long time love, SuperDad, and we both work full time. I’m not sad to be a working mom, as I just wasn’t cut out to be a stay-at-home mother and since Mason is destined to be an only child forever, the interaction with other kids is great for him. I also have a part-time job at a bookstore, where I work a whopping seven hours a month. I started working there when I began Dave Ramsey’s “Total Money Makeover” (which I would totally recommend!) in 2007 and while I no longer need the second job, I’ll never leave! It’s the perfect hobby job for me, as I LOVE to read.

I also love animals and we share our home with a retired racing greyhound and an elderly kitty – up until mid-2011 we were a 2 greyhound 2 cat family, so we’re still adjusting to what feels like an “empty” house. I’m the fundraising coordinator for my local animal shelter and my Facebook friends are probably sick of me posting more about animals and shelter events than what is going on with me and my family. That’s just how I am.

I’m horrible at these things, so let’s finish up with some random facts:

  • We live in the sticks, so no Target, Sam’s Club, Starbucks, etc. I’m insanely jealous of people who can just “run to” any store other than Wal-mart.
  • We’re  raising Mason in the same small town we grew up in
  • I don’t follow any sports and I’m horrible at video games
  • I am a firm believer in free-range parenting and can’t wait until Mason is old enough to hop on his bike and ride to a friend’s house
  • I’m incredibly cheap/thrifty and love shopping at Goodwill, Savers, and garage sales
  • I’ve been reading blogs since 1997 (back when they were known as “online journals”) and this is the fourth blog I’ve written since then.
  • I took a semester off from college trying to figure out what I wanted to “do” with myself and now 8 years have went by. I have over 80 credits towards a bachelor’s degree and one of these days, I’m going to go back and finish it.
  • My “style” is jeans and a t-shirt or hoodie. I’d much rather dress up in a giant animal costume than wear a dress. I’m not sure what that means, but maybe you do.
  • I’m an obsessive researcher. If it costs more than $10 and isn’t edible, you’ll probably find me online reading reviews and asking for recommendations. I think I spent 6 months researching carseats….
  • I’m the first of my friends to have a kid, but several of my friends are expecting in 2012.

Did I miss anything? Feel free to leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail! You can find me on Twitter or Goodreads if you’re so inclined.

Random Friday

I just had a big post typed up and when I went to hit save, my browser totally froze and crashed. TWICE.  It saved my title but not any of my entry.  Bummer.

On to the randomness….

* I talked to one of the other daycare moms. She is just as angry and other than being told that it would be smart for her son to wear a long sleeve shirt under his clothes, had no clue about the whole night heating thing. She was going to go talk to the director that next day. I’ll find out what happened when I see her on Sunday. On the bright side, despite me “rebelling” and only sending Mason to school in a single layer outfit, he’s been perfectly warm (as has the room) every time I’ve picked him up ever since my original entry. The temps have been in the 20s-40s, so it’s not because of a heat wave outside. If he starts seeming chilly or they bring up his “inadequate clothes” again, I’m going to be alll over them about the state law of bare minimum of 67º in a daycare (Thanks Leahan!) and raise some holy hell.

* It should be illegal to smoke in a vehicle containing kids. And the fine should quadruple if you don’t even bother to roll down a window. Why are some people so stupid??

* Wednesday we had our first “dog growl at kid” incident and I feel like the worst mother ever. Mason and Joe and I were all sitting on the couch and Mason basically DOVE on top of Joe and pinched him and Joe growled and tried to get up. TOTALLY my fault and a huge eye opener that I need to be more diligent since Mason is obviously too young to know any better. I feel like a total mom failure to both Mason AND Joe, but at least it was the kick in the butt I needed to prevent it from ever happening again.

* Mason slept unswaddled last night for the first time since he was about 2 weeks old. I was hoping it was the cure to his mysterious sleep issues. I don’t know what happened between 9:30 – 2:30 (which hopefully means not much since it didn’t wake me) but from 2:30 – 7:00 he cried out (like wah-wah-wah-silence) twice and went back to sleep. Definitely an improvement, but I’m not holding my breath quite yet.

* Actually, I am holding my breath. Because after he cries out, I lay in bed for a good half an hour or so, convinced that the second I fall asleep, he’s going to start full out crying. I wish I could convince my mind to just say screw it and fall right back asleep because it sucks to get back out of bed either way, so I might as well be sleeping.

* Our big (okay, only) plans for the weekend include making babyfood tomorrow (applesauce, peas, beans, and carrots) and swim lessons on Sunday. Exciting, huh?

*I didn’t blog about it, but Mason had two days this week where he threw up a whole bunch at daycare, to the point where they called me to come and get him. We’d get him home and he’d be fine. We were totally miffed at what was going on.  I had them not feed him (solid) lunch yesterday and he made it through the day, but then when I fed him (milk) when he got home, he threw up again. This morning he had the dirtiest filthiest most giantly rank diaper of all of his seven months, as opposed to the little turds here and there he’s had the last week. So I’m now guessing that the poor guy was backed up and was throwing up because of it. We’ll see how he did today, but I’m thinking that probably solved our issue.

* I have a whole additional post coming with more pumpkin patch pictures (taken with Mason the Cow). Aren’t you excited to see yet MORE Halloween themed pictures?? I’m gonna be the last blog on earth still dragging out the holiday. Sorry!

* Be sure to check in this weekend to see my AWESOME blog giveaway winnings over the past month in my monthly Weekend Won It! feature! And have a great weekend!

A Favor?

Okay guys, crazy favor to ask from you! My friend’s husband is a finalist to compete on an “Amazing Race” type TV show. They’re going to get their clues via social media and as the final qualifying measure to be on the show, they need social media contacts. And he just signed up for Facebook and Twitter this weekend….

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, can you guys give them a follow??? You can unfollow in a week if you want, they just need to reach 1000 FB followers (and unknown amounts of blog and twitter followers) by taping on Friday.

The Battle of the Swaddle

We’ve been swaddling Mason since he came home from the hospital. In fact, learning how to do a CORRECT Swaddle via Happiest Baby on the Block about a week after he came home saved our “Oh my god, we’re parents of this thing that won’t stop crying and won’t ever sleep” sanity.

But now, Mason is nearly 5 months old and when he’s half awake, he doesn’t want to be swaddled. He fights it and does everything in his power to break out. Wrapping and velcro be damned, his little arm is getting OUT of there if it’s the last thing he does!!

The obvious answer here would be to stop swaddling him, right? If he’s really sleepy when we put him down, he doesn’t fight it at all. He smiles when he’s being wrapped. And most importantly, he sleeps a million and a half times better swaddled.

Case in point – last night I didn’t re-wrap him after he broke out of his swaddle two minutes after I laid him down. I kept his bottom half wrapped and let his arms fly freely. Guess who woke up at 9:30 and 10:30 and 1:30 and 5:30? Guess who normally (a lot of you are going to hate me for this….) sleeps through the night without a single peep? Yep, swaddled Mason, that’s who.

So now I’m perplexed. I really like my sleep. He may fall right back asleep after a 30 second screaming fit at 1 am, but I do not. He’s gotten too big for the receiving blanket swaddle and we’re on the large size of the Kiddopotomuus Swaddler and that kept him contained for about a week before he realized how to break free from that.

Do we move on to a sleep sack or another swaddle blanket? Let him screech it out and hope he adjusts? There’s so many options, just not sure which one to go with….
